How RV and motorhome scams are usually run

RV fraud follows the seasonal buying cycle. A site appears in late winter with dozens of low-mileage coaches priced 30 to 50 percent under comparable listings, claims a consignment lot in a state with no sales tax on out-of-state delivery, and offers enclosed transport for a flat fee. The unit can never be seen because it is in secure storage or already on a carrier. Payment is a wire or Zelle transfer to a name that is not the dealership, and once it clears, the delivery date moves twice and then the phone stops working.

Category-specific checks before you pay

  • Ask for the 17-character VIN and run it through the free NICB VINCheck and a paid history report before discussing price.
  • Require a live video walkaround where the seller reads the VIN plate and the federal certification label aloud on camera.
  • Confirm the dealer licence number with the state motor vehicle department, not just the number printed on the invoice.
